Why this workshop:
Argumentative writing prepares students to research and present multiple perspectives, interpret information, and develop a clear point of view supported by credible evidence. Drawing on research and the demands of current standards, this workshop outlines methods to effectively teach students to write argumentative compositions. In addition to exploring thesis development, evidence selection, and effective use of transitions, participants will learn how to incorporate frameworks such as the Claim–Evidence–Reasoning (CER) and “They say, I say” (Graff & Birkenstein, 2024) as tools to help students structure arguments logically and persuasively.

- Identify the structure and necessary components of argumentative compositions
- Utilize graphic organizers and outlines to plan and organize information
- Gain various techniques for effective thesis and claim statements
- Learn to identify and incorporate relevant evidence effectively
